Two strikes and you’re out
After tripping over his own feet regarding real-time assistance (RTA) software yet again, poker pro Nacho Barbero has been released from his ambassador role at ACR Poker.
On Monday afternoon, ACR released a statement on behalf of CEO Phil Nagy stating that his recent comments about GTO Wizard “have raised serious concerns about his understanding of our security measures and his role as an ambassador.”
The statement went on to say that ACR does not censor its ambassadors, but that it does “expect them to speak truthfully and be well-informed about our security efforts so they can represent us—and the facts—accurately.”
ACR Pros love their RTA
The beginning of the end for Barbero at ACR Poker was in late January, when he promoted ACR’s Venom tournament with a photo on Instagram. What he likely did not realize at the time he posted the picture was that it showed an active instance of GTO Wizard, one of the most popular ACR software packages in the industry, while he had multiple tables open.
He was called out quickly, responding that he was not playing, but rather coaching other players and using GTO Wizard to run some hands for them.
saying that he was just a “goofball”
ACR then took heat for its nonchalant response to what it looked like its ambassador was doing, saying that he was just a “goofball” and that he was “not a GTO-style player and likely never will be.” The poker room later cleared him of wrongdoing after an investigation.
In February, a similar situation happened with ACR Pro Ebony Kenney, whose social media post from a year prior that also showed her with GTO Wizard open while playing in the Venom surfaced. She posted an apology, saying that she only used the app to review a big hand that she lost after the fact, while she was not in a hand.
ACR also cleared Kenney.
Hot mic alert
That brings us to last week, when “Only Friends” podcast co-host Conrad Simpson posted a short clip of PokerGO’s US Poker Open stream. In the video, Ike Haxton was clearly talking to Barbero about his earlier RTA controversy when he said: “I’m surprised ACR didn’t just, like, catch it automatically, to be honest.”
Barbero laughed and Haxton continued: “You can just have GTO Wizard open on your computer while you’re playing and ACR doesn’t even know? Are they even trying?”
And then came the reply that got Barbero’s canned: “I don’t think they’re trying.”
ACR Poker clearly took umbrage with Barbero’s characterization of the company and decided enough was enough.
“The nature of these comments reflects a fundamental misalignment with our values,” said Nagy. “As a result, we have decided to part ways with Nacho as an ambassador for ACR Poker.”
